I eventually roused myself at twenty to eleven. After all those early mornings it was right to liein for a change. First job, after tea (in bed: thank you Mrs Nails) and coffee was up the greenhouse to open door, let some fresh air in and water my charges. And lo! Discovery of the first mollusc damage of this current season.
The wreckage occurred in a 17.5cm x 13cm plastic tray which had housed prepacked mushrooms in the supermarket. Yesterday it was commandeering a fine show of twenty Evesham Special Brussels sprout seedlings. I sowed them in New Horizon PeatFree Multi Purpose Compost on 11th Feb and they come on through the seedleaf stage to where a first leaf proper was issuing, tiny and spadelike, from the junction of the other two. One has gone completely, severed cotyledons (seedleaves) mangled and wilting on the top with no sign of a stem with which to prop them up. A couple more are half destroyed, still standing but with all their greenery munched to practically nothing. A glinting trail of lubricating mucous tells the tale of slug or snail. I lifted the tray to have a look beneath, and also under those of neighbouring Green Marble F1 Brussels and Blusta kohl rabi, but no sign.
The die has been cast again. I know what has to be done. It a hassle to do consistently, but nightly torchlight missions to the greenhouse to seek and evict my unwanted guests are back on top of my list of evening jobs to do.
